Casablanca is a must-see destination on any trip to Morocco. In fact, although the capital is nearby Rabat, Casablanca is the country’s most populous city, with over three million residents—a perfect blend of modernity and tradition and a true symbol of modern Morocco. Not far—either in distance or in character—from the narrow streets of Marrakech and the vibrant colors of Fes, it is a city in step with the times, yet always faithful to its traditions. Located on the coast in the heart of Morocco, it serves as a hub for visiting other beautiful cities in the country, such as Tangier, Essaouira, and Chefchaouen. In Casablanca, you’ll find Morocco’s largest mosque—a state-of-the-art structure that, after sunset, uses a laser beam from the top of the minaret to point toward Mecca. If you want to soak up the city’s vibrant atmosphere, simply head to the main square, the heart of city life, flanked by wide arcades lined with cafes and shops of all kinds. The square is set against a backdrop of splendid colonial buildings in the Maghreb Art Deco style and features the Monumental Fountain, which at night is illuminated by a spectacular water showset to the rhythm of Arabic music, and the 50-meter-tall Clock Tower, which dominates the entire square. Casablanca is teeming with luxurious hotels where you can spend a weekend of relaxation and comfort, ranging from those furnished in a modern style to those reflecting the local character. Be sure to try traditional Moroccan and African cuisine, in addition to the well-known couscous with vegetables or tajine, a spiced meat mixture cooked in a special earthenware pot from which it takes its name, or fish prepared in various ways. You can also sample some traditional desserts, such as milk-and-orange cookies, orange-and-saffron cake, or the delicious ricotta fritters. Morocco is also the leading producer of Arab wine, so in Casablanca’s restaurants you’ll find a wide selection of locally produced wines—especially red wine—thanks to the area’s mild climate: you simply must try it!
