Cuneo, March 22, 2022 – Poste Italiane will participate with a special postal cancellation in the 60th anniversary celebrations of GEAC, Società di Gestione Aeroporto di Cuneo Levaldigi S.P.A.
The ceremony will take place on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in conjunction with the first Ryanair flight on the Cuneo – Rome route.
A dedicated philatelic space will be set up in the atrium of the Air Terminal, at which it will be possible to obtain the cancellation with the stamp created for the occasion.
The stamping ceremony will be attended by GEAC President Giuseppe Viriglio and the Board of Directors, in the person of Cav. Amilcare Merlo, and for Poste Italiane the Director of the Cuneo Branch Paolo Damiano, the Northwest Area Macro Philately Contact Person Annamaria Gallo and the Philately Contact Person for the province of Cuneo Gianluca Silvestre.
The cancellation made in the oval format, surrounded by the legend “Anniversary Cuneo Airport,” reproduces the two dates 1962 – 2022 and the inscription 60th, with an image of an airplane flying into the future.
The historical roots of Cuneo Airport date back to the late 1920s, when the “Campo d’Aviazione di Fortuna” Airport was born in 1929, with 75 hectares and a grassy runway. Immediately after the war the land was leased to farmers and only in 1960 the AeroClub “Provincia Granda” obtained the permit for the construction of the new airport.
On October 26, 1962, in view of the growing interest in developments at this airport, the Cuneo Airport Management Company (now GEAC S.p.A.) was formed. Since 1986 the airport has been authorized by the Ministry for national commercial traffic and since July 1990 for international traffic.
Remembering its history, the airport now looks toward the future and new goals. In fact, on the same day the first Ryanair flight on the Cuneo – Rome route is inaugurated, and the beautiful postcard printed for the occasion, with a plane ready to take off in the picturesque setting of Monviso, is meant to testify to its importance.
The figurative stamp, after being used on March 28, will be available for the next one hundred and twenty days at the philatelic counter in Saluzzo (CN), Via Onorevole Camillo Peano 1, and will then be deposited at the Museo Storico della Comunicazione in Rome to become part of the postal historical collection.
